The SCRIPT collection is the result of a chance encounter and a two-year creative dialogue. While in Paris in 2012, designer Esti Barnes discovered a book of calligraphy that stopped her in her tracks. The artist was Hassan Massoudy, an Iraqi-born master who had spent decades in Paris evolving a “syncretic” style – fusing the rigid tradition of Arabic script with the spontaneous energy of Japanese gestures and modern Lyrical Abstraction.
For Esti, the challenge was intoxicating: how to translate Massoudy’s “rapidity” – the fleeting energy of ink on paper—into the painstaking, knot-by-knot precision of a hand-woven rug.
Bringing together Massoudy’s vibrant, gestural strokes and Esti’s signature 3D carving, the collection features nine masterpieces woven in shimmering Chinese silk and wool. From Peace to Patience, each design is inspired by a specific proverb, turning the “fast” art of the pen into a tactile, permanent work of art.
Watch as Esti and Hassan discuss how they bridged their two worlds to bring this unique collection to life.
